Bible Reading Plan

From Pastor David McQueen

Let me encourage you to have a bible reading plan for your own personal growth, one that will insure that you read through the entire Bible with the desire to learn more for yourself. Read, asking the Holy Spirit for more understanding and insight.

Many of us, even pastors and leaders, have begun all sorts of systematic reading schemes, only to cast them aside after a few weeks. This is often because we get behind, grow discouraged or feel guilty about the failure, and we give up on the plan altogether. Others of us may do hours of Bible study and reading, but we have no consistent plan to be sure that we read the entire Bible regularly.

For this reason I suggest a method in which you are never ahead, but also never behind, a method by which you read in various sections of the Bible at the same time and become your own best cross-reference.

The plan I have used for years divides the Bible into five parts:

  1. Genesis through Esther - the historical section of the Hebrew Scripture
  2. Job through Song of Solomon - the poetic portion
  3. Isaiah through Malachi - the Prophets
  4. Matthew through Acts - the Gospels and Acts
  5. Romans through Revelation - the letters and the prophecy of John

I read from one Bible, making a small number denoting the year, as I move forward in each of the sections (6 for 2006, 7 for 2007 and so on). I may read in five different places on any given day. I often begin in the Psalms and then go to the Prophets; then on to the Gospels or Acts, to the letters or John's Revelation, and back to the historical section of the Old Testament.

Each of the sections, with the exception of the latter, is finished in less than a year by reading one chapter a day. You may proceed, however, as slowly or as swiftly as you like. You will never be behind, and the plan will work for you for the rest of your life. Just choose the Bible you want to use and begin today. In this way you will not be neglecting some portion of Scripture that may hold great benefits for you.

Credit for this plan goes to Don Finto.
